How can I change the file size of a picture?

I need the picture file to be less then 1MG, for a website. How can I change the file size of a picture?
There is an excellent program available for free download called IrfanView (see link below).

Install and launch the program...

Open your file that you wish to resize...

On the IMAGE menu, select Resize/Resample...

Set your sizing options, click OK, then save your modified file.

You'll want to experiment with various reductions in size to decrease the file size. Also, if the file is not already in jpeg format, use SaveAs and select JPEG as the file format to save. It tends to be much smaller without serious loss of quality.

If your image is, say, a jpg, then, you could go into an image editor, and convert it to a png.

For example, under Photoshop, under File, there's a selection called, Save For Web %26amp; Devices that'll let you save a jpg file as a png-8 file. That'll reduce the size of the file considerably, for your web page, and it'll display pretty much (almost impossible to tell by eyeballing it except for teensy images) as is! Gimp and PaintShop Pro have similar abilities (PaintShop Pro calls it %26quot;Save for Web%26quot;). I don't know what you're using. How can I change the file size of a picture?
If you're using a windows xp... Use the Microsoft Office Picture Manager( MOPM). Select the photo that you want to resize. Right click and open it with MOPM. When the window opens, click the %26quot;edit pictures%26quot; button (found on the upper right part of that window. Then a panel window will appear on the right side. Select crop or resize button. Adjust the picture to the size that you want and voila! You're done!

Crop it if you only want the subject of the picture and not including the background.

Resize it if you want the entire photo.

Also, you can use Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (older version) or Adobe Photoshop CS3 or CS2
