File Format Changes/Size Reductions?!?

I have a quite few files (videos and music) on my computer,

I want to do two things:

-Save space on my computer.

-Transfer some of them to my phone (which has little memory)

My friends have suggested I reduce the sizes of them and/or change the file format.

How do I do this?

How do I reduce the size (and I've already done the 'compress files' in 'Properties')?

How do I change the format of a video/music track (apparently this is possible)?

And, finally, what is the best video format that will keep the best quality?File Format Changes/Size Reductions?!?
what exactly do you want to do with them after you put them on your phone? Does your phone have a memory card slot on it? you can get a pretty big memory card now for cheap, i would look into that first....As for saving space on your computer, you may want to burn some dvds to back up those files.

to reduce audio or video files, there are several types of software out there, on i use is called audacity (its free)

this will let you reduce the size of the music files, but will also reduce the quality as well.

there are also different video programs that will reduce them to a size better for your phone.

virtual dub is a program that can %26quot;recode%26quot; a video to reduce it's size, however it's not beginner friendlyFile Format Changes/Size Reductions?!?
Honestly, an easier solution would be to go buy a brand new hard drive, and just add it to your machine. Easy extra space. Hard drives are pretty cheap right now, so it's not a huge budget crunch.

That doesn't really work for the phone.

As for video formats, xvid (divx) does OK as far as size/quality.

that's a google search for tutorials on how to convert. Just find one you like.File Format Changes/Size Reductions?!?
I've been using this total video converter it's seems to work really good but man does it take a long time. i suggest the wmv format but if you want them on your phone it has a lot of options for that. so you just gotta pick the one that works best on your phone

Heres a link to download it.

It's just a trial program so you will just get a little water mark in the top left.File Format Changes/Size Reductions?!?
The best quality is normally the best size (for a few reasons, one of which is that video compression isn't lossless - to compress a file you discard quality).

That said, you can get a good quality 1TB drive (Seagate Barracuda) for around $100, and a 1.5TB for not much more. That should hold a lot of files for you. (An external SATA-USB case is about $30.)
